Camping with Technology

I was starting to write a column on unions when a commercial came on TV advertising a product called NOMAD 7 ( http://www.amazon.com/ELITE-Nomad-Ultra-Compact-Compatible-Devices/dp/B004AV4C0Y )which struck me as so funny, I decided to write about it instead.  Some old boy, wearing more camouflage than an Infantryman, was touting the merits of a backpackable solar panel to be taken on camping and hunting trips.  It can charge your cell phones, computers, GPS systems, and even light your cigarette for you.

This device is a solar panel worn on the back on the hiker, camper, hunter, etc.   According to Amazon.com, this device is for  "the minimalist on the go"  Huh?  Minimalist?  A minimalist requires a USB outlet?   A 12 Volt female cigarette adapter?   A cell phone charger?  Ok, I can accept the cell phone charger as a safety device.  Beats a smoke signal or flare, much less firing three times for help.

It claims to charge the sportsmans GPS devices as well.  Minimalist?  A USB port?  A laptop!  What? Does this guy needs to Google "Deer" in order to identify his target with a picture?  He/she can't do without Facebook or "World of Warcraft" overnight?  In my opinion, if you need a GPS to go hunting or camping you ought to just stay home and devote yourself to learning to read a map and use a compass.  Then you won't need a GPS nor the solar panel.

Back in my younger days when I hiked, camped, hunted, fished, and trapped; minimalist meant going out for a couple of days to a week with nothing but what was in your ruck.  Period.   If you didn't need it, you didn't bring it.

Hopefully it doesn't rain out the week the sportsman with the solar panel goes out, but I suspect those who would purchase this device would not go out, much less stay out in the rain.

At least with this device, they won't be hauling generators around.
