Election Day and Voting
We have a primary election today in Georgia and we have been hearing the urgings of media, government officials, candidates, and community organizers of the importance to register and vote.
My opinion? If you are too freaking lazy, apathetic, or cynical to get out and vote? Keep your butt at home. If a person can not be bothered to fill out a simple piece of paper, and lets face it, it has been made appallingly easy to register; then this person will not be bothered to acquaint themselves with the issues or even the fundamentals of how our system works. Many citizens will spend more time in line at the local supermarket buying a case of beer than they will be willing to spend to vote.
The laws of our country have been amended many times just to ensure citizens can vote.
• (1870) Amendment 15. Voting Rights – Black Suffrage
• (1913) Amendment 17. Direct Election of Senators
• (1920) Amendment 19. Women’s Right to Vote
• (1961) Amendment 23. Presidential Elections for the District of Columbia
• (1964) Amendment 24. Poll Tax Ended
• (1971) Amendment 26. Vote for Eighteen-Year-Olds
Registering to vote has never been easier. The government and civic organizations put forth an enormous amount of manpower and funding to ensure people are registered, to encourage them to vote and people still do not do so. Personally, I am not going to cajole, push, plead, beg, or bribe anyone to acquaint themselves with the candidates and issues, get to their polling place and cast their ballot.. I would prefer to maintain the 30% of voters who do show up and are knowledgeable concerning the issues and candidates instead of a possible 100% of voters showing up and 70% of them not even knowing who the candidates are or what the issues are.
We have seen the results of an uninformed public being brought out to vote. Lazy or apathetic? Stay home and watch TV.
According to Daniel Webster, we should, "Impress upon children the truth that the exercise of the elective franchise is a social duty of as solemn a nature as man can be called to perform; that a man may not innocently trifle with his vote; that every elector is a trustee as well for others as himself and that every measure he supports has an important bearing on the interests of others as well as on his own." This is a fairly serious legacy to live up to.

I've said this for a while. Every time, in fact, I see a clip of Jay Leno's "Jay Walking" segment where he asks American citizens [read voters] simple questions about our history and system of government, I wonder if it's in the best interests of the country to have such loose voting requirements. There are some people, indeed, too lazy, apathetic, and ill-informed to be voters.
