President Obama is Given the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced its winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.  They unanimously gave the award to President Obama.  I say gave as he has yet to actually do anything in the world arena to merit this award other than spout a lot of rhetoric and campaign type speeches.

According to the official statement:

Announcement

The Norwegian Nobel Committee

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded

to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy

and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision

of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy

has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other

international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for

resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from

nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to

Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great

climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and

given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those

who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the

majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that

international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman.

The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of

responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

Oslo, October 9, 2009

President Obama said Friday that he was "surprised and deeply humbled" by the decision of the Norwegian Nobel Committee to award him the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

I bet he was surprised.  He is aware he has done nothing.  The committee is aware he has done nothing.  Even the news crews covering the event were surprised by the announcement as the names were submitted before Obama was even elected.  The finalists names were gathered in February.  He had certainly accomplished nothing by then.  I can only assume this is another example of supposedly reasonable people being blinded by his rhetoric and oratory skills (if he has a teleprompter).   In essence, President Obama is being given this award because of his VISION!  That is correct; he has a vision no one else has ever had or voiced; this alone apparently merits the Nobel Peace Prize.

This act of awarding Obama the prize doesn't come close to the outrage of awarding the prize to
Yasser Arafat, the PLO terrorist in 1994 (along with Israel's Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres).  That award was given in recognition for a physical act: the Oslo Accords.  Of course, the treaty turned out to be a farce and there was no peace.  The award then, as now, was premature and unmerited.

This committee has lost any shred of  credibility and respect that I once had for them and my disgust with the committee knows no limits.
