Senator Gregg takes the high road

“It has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me."  With these words, Senator Judd Gregg withdrew his nomination for Commerce Secretary and retained his integrity as well as his principals.

He went on to say, "“Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.”  It had become clear to Senator Gregg there were differences that simply could not be overcome.  “That was my mistake, not his,” the senator said, adding that he admired President Obama and the team he has assembled.  “Bottom line,” he concluded, “this is simply a bridge too far for me.”

Two days ago  I wrote on constitutional issues regarding the 2010 census and the Obama administrations blatant power grab in placing control on the census under his Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.  The Census Bureau would now report to the Chief of Staff instead of the Secretary of Commerce.

This is not Senator Greggs first issue with Democrats screwing around with the census.  In 1999, he fought with President Clinton over the 2000 census.  According to the NY Times, "The Commerce Department under the Clinton administration wanted to use statistical sampling in the 2000 to arrive at population figures on which Congressional districting would be based. Republicans resisted furiously, arguing that only a true head count was proper. Political analysts believed that statistical sampling would help Democrats by adding more urban and minority people to the totals.

In early 1999, the Supreme Court ruled that the 2000 census had to be done by traditional head count as far as redistricting was concerned, but that sampling could be used for other purposes, like the distribution of federal money."

In my previous story I had stated ,"A couple of things need to happen here.  Judd Gregg needs to resign in protest.  He was only window dressing anyway, a Republican prop to lend legitimacy to this power grab."  The second thing that needs to occur, is for citizens to write their elected officials and complain; complain loudly and often.  Do not let this issue die or fade away; step by step, the Democrats are moving to ensure they retain complete and total control of the legislative branch of the government.  With the appointments of supreme court judges, Obama ensures Democrats will retain control over the judicial branch.

But, at least Senator Gregg has made a stand, so any appearance of tacit Republican approval has been removed from this unconstitutional maneuver.
