Let the games of retribution begin

Many readers will recall in April 2008 then Sen Obama while running for President told the Philadelphia Daily News that investigations into the Bush administration would be conducted if he won the White House.  Obama stated, "[I]f crimes have been committed, they should be investigated.  You're also right that I would not want my first term consumed by what was perceived on the part of Republicans as a partisan witch hunt, because I think we've got too many problems we've got to solve."  He added vowing that if elected, he would ask his attorney general to initiate a prompt review of Bush-era actions to distinguish between possible "genuine crimes" and "really bad policies".

This was further stressed in September 2008 in an interview with ABC news when Joe Biden stated the Obama administration could pursue criminal charges against the Bush administration.  "We will not be stopped from pursuing any criminal offense that's occurred," he continued, going on to praise congressional committees for the deliberate pace of their inquiries into alleged Bush administration misdeeds.

Members of Congress are "doing the right thing, they're not making false accusations about anything … they're collecting data, subpoenaing records, they're building a file", Biden said.

"If there has been a basis upon which you can pursue someone for a criminal violation, they will be pursued – not out of vengeance, not out of retribution, out of the need to preserve the notion that no one, no attorney general, no president -- no one is above the law."

Well.  The first week of the Obama administration has just been completed and true to their words the first subpoena has been issued against Karl Rove.  The subpoena commanded Rove to appear on Feb. 2 for a deposition on the U.S. attorney firings and the prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, a Democrat.  The former governor was convicted on bribery and other charges and was sentenced to more than seven years in prison.

Of primary interest is the Bush administration's firing of nine U.S. attorneys.  Keeping in mind all of these were federal attorneys hired by President Bush and serving at his pleasure.  This means they can be released at any time for any reason.  This is the same situation President Clinton was involved in when he released 93 federal attorneys.  Yes, 93!  And some of those attorneys were actively investigating him at the time of the firings.  The national response was he had the authority to do so.  Why is President Bushs situation different?  Because the Obama administration chooses to make it so.

This is the first subpoena.  Look for many more in the very near future. .

The Democrats have conducted most of this campaign like we were a third world nation with election hijinks and thuggery at the polling places.  The President has conducted his inauguration and move into the White House like a Caesar assuming the throne.  So, why should we not expect this manner of conduct from the victorious Chicago politician?
