Israeli Basketball Team Attacked in Turkey
Turkey represents the latest front in the Israelis war against stopping Gazan rocket attacks.
Israeli team Bnei Hasharon was to have played Turkeys team Turk Telekom in a Eurocup competition being played in Anakra Turkey when over 3,000 Turkish fans rushed the floor shouting "Allah Akbar" and "Death to the Jews". Many of the fans were waving Palestinian flags. Other fans threw bottles at the Israeli players.
The Israeli players were forced to flee to their locker room for over two hours until they were able, under heavy police escort, to escape to their hotel. The police had a presence of over 1,500 officers, including 500 in plain clothes.
An anti-Israeli rally had been held in the parking lot earlier with an Israeli flag being burned.
Strangely enough, the referee demanded the game continue after the fans were cleared. The Israeli team, for obvious reasons declined and will face a technical loss to the Turkish team.
"After a delay due to on-court disturbances before the game, the Turk Telekom vs Bnei Hasharon game was not played due to Bnei´s refusal to play despite clearing the arena of fans," a ULEB press release read.
"The situation will be reviewed by the disciplinary judge to give the final ruling. Under league rules the refusal to play a game by a team can be sanctioned and the game can be given to the opposing team 20-0."
Convenient.
