Update: MV Iran Deyanat, the Pirated Iranian vessel

International and national news sources have now picked up the story of the Iranian shipping vessel captured by pirates off of the coast of Somalia.  The US Navy now has a presence in the area and has in fact encountered the pirates, firing on them to warn them off.

It is believed the iron ore the Iranians claim is on the ship is a radioactive substance as experts state no chemical agent will produce the results that have afflicted the pirates, such as hair falling out and skin burns.  The number of pirates that have fallen ill or died is unknown.

Talks with Iran fell through when the pirates were poisoned by the cargo according to Andrew Mwangura, Director of the Kenya based East African Seafarers' Assistance Program.

There is more data available on the ship itself.  The information is provided by VesselTracker.com
